TIBWIN PLANTATION

Built ca. 1805, in St. James Santee Parish, Charleston County. John Collins received a grant for the Tibwin property in 1705 and it remained in the Collins family until purchased by William Matthews in 1794. Matthews is thought to have built the house, originally a story-and-a-half cottage, in 1805. In 1822, a hurricane caused great destruction in the Santee Delta and it was reported that the storm destroyed Matthews's dwellings, outhouses, and crops; however, the house was probably not a complete loss as tradition and the evidence suggest that it was moved back from the water's edge and rebuilt at its present location. At the turn of the century, a second story was added, giving the house a new double portico facade.
